The Labour Party recorded a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s democratic journey as it held its National Congress on April 27, 2026, in Umuahia, Abia State.

In what has been widely described as a defining moment in the nation’s political history, Nnenadi Usman emerged as the National Chairman of the party. Her election marks a historic breakthrough, as she becomes the first woman ever to occupy such a top leadership position within a major political party structure in Nigeria. The development has been hailed by party faithful and political observers as a bold step toward gender inclusion and progressive leadership in the country’s political landscape.


Also elected at the Congress was Acho Obioma, who assumes office as the National Secretary of the party. His emergence is expected to further strengthen the administrative framework of the Labour Party as it continues to position itself as a formidable force in Nigeria’s evolving democratic space.


Speaking at the event, the Executive Governor of Abia State, Alex Chioma Otti, commended members of the party for their unity, resilience, and commitment to democratic ideals. He assured stakeholders of his unwavering support for the party’s vision and pledged continued collaboration to advance good governance and people-oriented policies.


In an interview with Nigeria News Channel, Ibekwe Nnamdi Chimdi, also known as OziomaChi and the Honourable Member representing Bende North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, expressed strong confidence in the newly elected leadership. He emphasized that the outcome of the Congress reflects the collective will of the people and the party’s dedication to transparency and inclusiveness.


Hon. Ibekwe further reaffirmed his commitment to promoting the goodwill and ideals of the Labour Party, noting that the new leadership presents an opportunity for renewed energy, unity, and strategic growth.


The 2026 National Congress of the Labour Party in Umuahia is widely regarded as a turning point—signaling a new chapter defined by inclusivity, strengthened leadership, and a reinvigorated drive toward national development.
