Simon Ekpa Sentenced to Six Years Imprisonment Over Terrorism Charges

A Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland has sentenced Mr. Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Government in Exile, to six years imprisonment after finding him guilty of terrorism-related offenses.

The court held that Ekpa was guilty of inciting crimes with terrorist intent and participating in the activities of a terrorist organization. He was also convicted of aggravated tax fraud.

According to the ruling, Ekpa—who has been a long-term resident of Lahti, Finland, and previously served as a local councillor—used his considerable social media influence between August 2021 and November 2024 to incite violence in Nigeria’s Biafra region.

The court established that he played a leading role in a separatist movement that operated armed groups advocating for Biafran independence through violent means. Evidence showed that Ekpa provided weapons, explosives, and ammunition to these groups through his contacts, while also encouraging his followers on social media platform X to commit crimes in Nigeria.

Though Ekpa denied all charges during the proceedings, the district court ruled that his actions, committed while residing in Finland, fell under its jurisdiction.

Born in the former Biafra region, Ekpa relocated to Finland in 2007 as an athlete before venturing into politics.

The judgment, delivered on Monday, is not yet final and remains subject to appeal at a higher court.
